http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/12549-handcent-shortcut-icon-missing.html#post77129 Basically you wipe the phone & sd card, reinitialize the phone, then IMMEDIATELY turn off HTC Sense UI in favor of the standard Android UI. The user that gave these instructions seems to not have any problems after they do this. Just a FYI and further evidence that HTC has some issues they may or may not be ignoring.
