I'm not sure if I've ever seen that icon in the upper right corner, but I've seen apps pop up a dialog while fetching data, etc.
If that happens to be what you want, you could use what's called a ProgressBar. There are two kinds: the "spinner" kind, and the kind that actually shows the "progress" (percentage complete).
