The USB driver, revision 2 was specifically updated to support the Droid.

I'm guessing you had installed an driver for a g1 a long time ago?

Around 1.6 we changed the model of the driver, and are now based on winUSB.

If you have an earlier driver you will need to upgrade the driver. See
info here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html#WinUsbDriver

Other devices are not currently supported (see list of supported
device on the right of the above link), and require drivers provided
by the manufacturer.
