I think the real point is simply that it really should be an option to configure more home screens if you wish to. They can certainly be useful, especially with all the widgets out there now. Folders can't have widgets and are not easilly sortable. The functionality is built in to android, but it's hidden, and should not require another memory hogging, buggy home replacement just to expose a little more desktop space.
This is one of those areas where android still falls short in basic customization, and I for one would like to see a liitle more thought and love put into the stock android home, especially now that it's showing up on more high profile devices.
