If you need to have multiple things happening at the same time -- such as
some operation that can take a long time to complete, and some other
operations that are shorter and you don't want to have blocked by the longer
one -- then you will want to make your own thread(s).  (At least until
AsyncTask gets a little more sophisticated.)
