Dianne, your answers are often just the spur I need. I already had the data in such a place (a static list), and was under the misapprehension that when a root activity of an app went away, the app's entire process was cleaned up. This will work fine for me, but I will now want to spend some time slimming down the data to the minimum so I am not a drag on the system.
