that is really too bad. it would be a huge battery saver and make widget use more realistic. for non-zero widget update periods, it should just automatically avoid updating the widgets if they aren't visible. for manual alarm-updated widgets, there should be a way to ask if the widget is visible.
i'm struggling with a related problem ... trying to tell if a widget has been removed from the desktop. i need to stop the service that is running to update the widget in this case.
