Another theory to throw out there is that when people get a
notification that there's an update available for an app, they think
"oh yeah, I forgot I had installed that app.  better uninstall it to
free up space."  I've done this several times.

But the question here is why in the past deploying an update didn't
show a similar big drop in Actives. Unless there's been an intentional
change in how actives are tracked.  But then again, we would be
noticing this trend for more apps rather than just ones with recent
updates.
