Try a band-pass filter. Remove the low frequencies (such as the constant 1 g falling) and the high frequencies (such as bumping and vibrating). Look up digitial filters. Chances are some simple <24 line algorithm will do the trick. I'm going to try myself using the accelerometer demo app when I get some time.
