The default was upped from 8KB to 12KB in 1.5 or 1.6. The upper limit is 256KB. Most apps run happily in 12KB, but some of the interpreted language runtimes get a bit crazy. Big fat functions might use 100 bytes of stack, so you should be good for a couple thousand stack frames at the upper limit.
