Directly emailing core Android developers (per your CC) is not polite.
Please bear in mind that there are millions of Android device users, and
the core Android development team is not front-line technical support.
Your carrier (e.g., T-Mobile), or possibly your device manufacturer
(HTC), offers front-line technical support.

When you contacted technical support regarding this problem, what did
they tell you?

That is certainly a possibility, though I'm not completely certain that
this would explain all your symptoms.

Correct.

On a "stock My-Touch-3G (i.e. not rooted/jail-broken)", the only one who
could would be HTC.
