You've been ably answered, and solved your problem, but I notice that nobody ever explained WHY your progress bar didn't show up.
You may have inferred the answer yourself, but I'll state it explicitly: You never gave it a chance to, because the thread that would have displayed it -- the main UI thread -- was busy doing your unpacking.
