You may find information about HTC upgrades here http://developer.htc.com/index.html yet upgrading is not a trivial process so, be careful! don't kill your phone. Regarding the question about BT chat, I think early versions of Android only supported AD2P and no file transfers or any other BT usage but routing audio to BT headsets.
