An approach I've used is to have location listeners on both coarse and fine. In your case, the first one may be the coarse location fix, if that's available, or it also could be the fine if GPS was used recently (like in a map). This should result in pretty good performance. I've seen an average of 5 seconds or less to get the first fix. Make sure to terminate your listeners when you're finished.
