Ah ha! Looks like my crop intent wasn't getting recognized because the data I was passing it had an unknown MIME type. Setting the data using "intent.setDataAndType(Uri, String) did the trick. Looking forward to testing this new code on the friend's Droid (old code actually did work on the emulator all the time).
