I can't speak specifically to the droid (I haven't turned mine on yet, hoping to swap it for an N1) but the way the google io devices worked was basically that - they "just worked" for a month, and then you had to set up an actual plan.
ISTR t-mobile actually left it on an extra few days for people, although I don't know if they sent any reminder sms's or anything.
