The theme loads first, so when your content is ready to display, it replaces the background (android:windowBackground) with the content. To the user, there isn't any "black" screen, it displays the splash screen nearly instantaneously, so the appearance is seamless from clicking the icon to display of the content. This is described in Mark Murphy's books, so if you want a code tutorial on how to do it, splurge for the $35 it costs for a subscription, really worth it in my opinion.
