Gravity defines the layout of elements laid out within that view - not the view itself.
For what I think you may be trying to achieve, you may be better off with a RelativeLayout instead of a LinearLayout for your outer layout. Set the relative layout gravity to center_horizontal, then put the Image view to the right of the linear layout.
