Haha... I went through the same process, and it took the Verizon guys over an hour to figure it out!
They need to give you a phone number for the Verizon employee number services (you need a number based on which part of the US you're in). Basically, the phone number you have is the kind that Verizon employees get, and only certain tech support guys can touch them. Once you call that number and explain your situation, it will take them less than a minute to unhook your phone from that number. Then you go back to the normal retail store and port your number.
