For local playback, I have never had a problem getting a video to work
on an actual device.

For HTTP streaming playback, your video needs to be marked as "safe for
streaming". In other words, the MOOV atom needs to appear before the
first MDAT atom. MP4Box -hint will apply this fixup to a video file.
