I initially had the same problem (HTC Desire, which I believe is 99.9%=Nexus One) on Win32 (Vista, XP). SDK USB driver didn't work. I came across a recommendation to install the HTCSync exe that was on the SD card - and that did it.
I assume that something equivalent exists for the N1?
