AFAIK SOAP is a bit heavyweight for a mobile device, but in many cases people have to use that existing legacy technology. Many people are using lighter weight technologies such as SAX, XPP, JSON to download and REST for bidirectional data. Also, do you really have to download all 10,000 items to make your mobile application work effectively?
