Regarding Alliance membership, however, note that the Alliance is more like a "core team" for an open source project than a consortium or similar industry body. What I mean is that the Alliance focuses on creating, maintaining, and shepherding the Android software, and not on making deals and the like. No one will need the Alliance's permission to do things with Android, once the source code is released. So, there's not really any need to join the Alliance, per se. Right now, the Alliance companies are focused on getting v1.0 out the door, and then releasing the source. That's why we aren't actively soliciting new members at this time: we have all the pieces we need to launch v1.0.
