In the UK there have only been 25,000 pre-registrations for the device (source : http://uk.techcrunch.com/2008/10/15/t-mobile-g1-out-on-october-30/). In this case pre-registration is simply filling in a form which puts you into a prize draw to win a 'phone, so I would suspect a number of those will only be interested in the G1 if they win one.
Comparing this to the iPhone 3G, the chosen carriers site in the UK (O2) was taken down after being swamped by 200,000 pre-registrations after Steve Jobs' keynote speech. Could this mean that Android may have a tougher time cracking the UK and European markets, and with European markets will the lack of translations of applications into other languages start to hurt?
