If you can't replace the firmware, you can't install anything, let alone Android. For the subset that do, a custom Android port would be required, to add in support for device-specific drivers. This is akin to what RockBox has to go through to port their replacement MP3 player firmware to a new device. RockBox deals with more limited devices, but Android will need more drivers ported.
