Just because there's no time for icebergs doesn't imply there's time for
ice cubes.

No quibbles there.

The G1 is always loaded with a "work in progress" version of Android.
Just as the PC I'm typing on now is running a "work in progress" version
of Ubuntu, and the netbook to my left is running a "work in something
resembling progress and wouldn't you really rather be running Vista?"
version of Windows XP.

Heck, I can only hope that bugs are found, fixed, and released for
Android with the frequency that they are for Ubuntu and Windows.

Well, truth be told, when RealNetworks released Helix, the result seemed
to be mostly a collective yawn from the community.

But your point is absolutely valid -- "many eyes make all bugs shallow"
only works when there are many eyes on the code in question.
