Just because there's no time for icebergs doesn't imply there's time for ice cubes. > I would prefer that the source code was opened a lot earlier so problems > could be fixed before it's in the hands of users. The G1 is always loaded with a "work in progress" version of Android. Just as the PC I'm typing on now is running a "work in progress" version of Ubuntu, and the netbook to my left is running a "work in something resembling progress and wouldn't you really rather be running Vista?" version of Windows XP. Heck, I can only hope that bugs are found, fixed, and released for Android with the frequency that they are for Ubuntu and Windows. > If you think back to when Netscape released the source code of Naviagtor > in 1998, or Real Networks released Helix as the Open source player in > 2003, the first thing that happened was that the development community > started crawling over it for bugs and turned up a quite few which some > of the less moral developers started to use for their own gain, so why > did Google think Android wouldn't follow the same path? Well, truth be told, when RealNetworks released Helix, the result seemed to be mostly a collective yawn from the community. But your point is absolutely valid -- "many eyes make all bugs shallow" only works when there are many eyes on the code in question. -- Mark Murphy (a Commons Guy) http://commonsware.com _The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development_ Version 1.3 Published! --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Discuss" group.
