I like the idea of having various sort options. I also agree that sorting by most recent update has practical merit for looking for updates. I would add that frequent patches is actually a feature that I desire in an application. It does, however, open an avenue for abuse. What approaches can we think of for mitigating that counter- productive behavior?
Here's one thought: Add another type of rating - "Update Relevance". That would enable the social network to compensate for intentional noise in the update frequency signal. I do think that a richer rating and searching mechanism will be healthy for the market. I would also guess that there is at least one in the works. I would not be surprised to hear that there are several underway - both inside and outside Google. That development, underway as I'd guess it is, is a very good reason to have this discussion.
