When you go into sms settings, scroll down to Notifications as you
said there is an option to select ringtone and that becomes your sms
ringtone. I'm running RC30, If you go into general settings and scroll
down to build number you will RCxx and that is your software version.
If your are running something older than RC30 you may need to update
to get the feature.

I got my phone with RC30 so I don't know about the older versions.
