I would suggest that we be given the option to vibrate, then ring on an incoming call. My cheapie cell phone that I had before I upgraded to the G1 had this, and it was really handy, because it gave you a second or two to get the phone out of your pocket before the ringer started in earnest.
Also, the sound volume for the ringer would take about a second to ramp up to full intensity, which doesn't sound like a lot but it is enough so that it does not startle you or others. Handy!
