As a developer I want to develope on the same device that millions of consumers
are using. Why would I waste my valuable time on a custom device? There is no
money in it.

Al, let me explain this situation:

It is not the consumer QiGi i6 you can get in stores next month. It is
a special order DEV version of the same hardware. With a large order
we can change things. For example, I am requesting a HVGA LCD right
now and it is of course within their capability to do it. The
look&feel may also be slightly different. And we can ask for more
memory, for example.

Again, I am only interested in brining more tools for dev/test, not
directly for consumers. If someone wants to do that, I can help but I
am not interested in doing it myself.

want this phone, even if you think you do. The physical design feels one
or two iterations behind, but the real problem stems from the fact that
you're rocking QVGA resolution here; yes, granted, Android runs -- but
in its default layout, it's clearly designed for a few more pixels both
horizontally and vertically."

I don't think there's going to be a lot of interest as is, but I wish
you all the best with your efforts.

No, it is a dev version of the TechFaith QiGi i6. Just like ADP1, it
has unlocked and the developer can do anything with it.

I am requesting a bigger screen at this time. They can do
customizations like that, with a price. So if you can let me know what
feature/price is most desirable in a dev phone, I will negotiate and
get the deal done.

Convincing for what?

I am not asking you to pay $$$. I just want to see if I can get enough
interests for a large order of 250+ sets. If there is any further
risk, it is me, not you, who will handle the risk. The phone must be
good for developers/testers otherwise I won't be interested in it..

Look. I am not a business man. This is truly an Android developer to
Android developer talk. I won't expect any consumer/non-programmer get
involved. You may have to buy your snake oil somewhere else.

Of course I will have to show you the phone, have a few people test
it, and write at least one full sized review. The company will provide
english version of manual in a few days with other marketing materials
including full size images. I want to first see if there are other
programmers like me excited about a new Android device; if not I will
never want to spend time on it any more.

On Feb 17, 9:52 am, Al Sutton <[email protected]> wrote:

Maybe you could post a link to the manual, some pictures, etc., or are
you expecting people to stump up cash without knowing what they're
getting beyond it being an Android 'phone?

Vincent Wu wrote:

Yes I know that one it is called OPhone from Lenovo; it has no
connection with the one I am referring to.

Any phone order through me will have English manuals and the OS Image
will be English too.

Does this mean a phone sold in china will not have a working

Android

Market app when it is sent to US? If it is true my little operation
will fail for sure.

What happens if you travel to the States?

China Mobile(carrier) will be selling the handsets & I assume with

Android

Market since China Mobile is/will be their partner there. Maybe more

carrier

partners in China, but none that I know.
You travel to the USA with that phone & if your contract allows

roaming

and

Market allows you to access it whilst roaming, yes.

Guys, it won't be possible. Alternative device manufacturers that

don't

have

relationships with (Carrier+Google) won't be able to complete the

Android

Market payment fulfillment.
Android is open enough and open for alternative device

manufacturers

to

use.

They will need an App Manager(some branded) for their devices and

content

other than Android Market(since AM will not be accessible to these
subscribers). Hence expect the growth pattern for alternative

marketplaces

to surpass Android Market in global reach... till the day when

Google

Checkout is available globally and have convinced every person in

the

world

to submit their personal details (who I am, how I pay, my habits,

etc) to

Google.

For global reach you need local payment options and these are

called

alternative payments as each user is accustomed to in their local

town or

country.

Combination of Google Checkout and carrier billing will work, but

still

handicaped. Not to mention that its a lot more difficult for a

giant

to

enter local countries and offer payment services without a battle

with

local

authorities and companies... Though this is another

corporate/politics

issue.

George,

Going forward I can see Google only allowing Market on 'phones in
regions where they have sorted out the payment method because I

pay-for apps and another not).

As for how many territories they offer payment in, well, who

knows.
