Until your contract is up they haven't recovered the cost of the 'phone you got at the start of it (plus their profit of course), so moving to a more expensive tariff and getting a new 'phone still wouldn't cover the cost of your original 'phone, it would only tie you in to a contract to cover the cost of the G1.
