Yes please keep this on point >250,000 free downloads is meaningless. The only thing this can help us understand is how many G1 phones are out there.
Even charging the minimum price for an app will see this download count drop significantly, to the point where NO PAID APP IN THE FIRST MONTH OF SALES HAS EVEN SOLD 10,000 UNITS. Do we care? Of course we do! Many of us (myself included) already have dayjobs, spouses, children, so investing large amounts of time into something which ultimately has no monetary reward is something we are keen to avoid. For the record, I think there is money to be made - after all, we are all coming into this fairly early and we still only have 1 handset and 2 countries that accept payment. A lot of us are thinking of re-tooling into iPhone, but whereas the potential sales are higher, the chances of making a product that gets anyone's attention is close to zero.
