The first generation iPhone surely must have helped in the terms of customer reach, popularity etc., which in turn attracts developers, so I won't deny that there's *some* advantage there. But it did not support applications (and I'm purposely ignoring the "website apps" that one supposedly was to write for it). Real applications were only introduced with the 3G.
