Well, this is a blatant plug for my app, but I'd recommend
EboBirthday. Syncs with your contacts (so you will see it on
gmail.com), your calendar, has reminders (each of those features
optional), handles any kind of date (like anniversaries or whatever
else you fancy, like date of death?), doesn't require a contact to add
a birthday, but if you do, you can send a text message or a mail.

Also, you can import existing birthday data from your contact notes,
your old Windows Mobile phone, or your Facebook account.
