I second Al's original point though: Once a donation is mandatory,
it's not a donation anymore. Instead of this backwards way of getting
your cheddar, why not turn the existing version as a clearly marked
DEMO, develop the app a little bit more and release it as a paid app?

I understand that the author probably had wrong expectations on how
much people would donate, but this way of handling it seems wrong.
