Yes, this would be an excellent solution to the current problem of having lite/trial versions of apps on the market.
The only issue I immediately see with this is with the DRM layer. As I understand it, developers with ADP's cannot download DRM-encumbered applications from the market. This method, assuming it was popular, would mean that the free versions of the apps would have to be DRM protected in order for the pay-for version to be protected. The side-effect being even more restrictions imposed on the developer phone. Disclaimer: I'm not a proud owner of an ADP, but it would be nice not to cause them further problems...
