Hi Neil, Please submit a bug report to http://b.android.com. Be sure to specify the exact year make and model of your car or the model of your carkit.
I don't know of any general issue like this, but there are a lot of strange carkit implementation so it is possible is a regression. Letting us know the model gives us a chance to include this in our testing.
