I cured my problem by deleting my default Calendar in Google and starting again. I had set up a couple of sync clients (Plaxo and Google Calendar Sync) and these seem to have generated numerous duplicates in my calendar, which was overloading the G1's sync capabilities (hence the constant sync'ing).
It's nice to see that online synchronisation is still a mess.
