I ended up rooting my phone for a number of reasons, some of which are
still relevant today:

1. WPA2 Enterprise Support: Wireless access at my work--a very, very
large environment which you don't leave even for lunch--requires WPA2
Enterprise. But if you don't have root on the G1, you're done.

2. Run Apps and Games from SD card: I found that I was deleting apps
and games that I had paid for just to save space on the internal
memory of my phone. The fact that I had paid for things that I was
being forced to delete really pushed me over the edge, and I am 100%
certain I was not alone. Now I have virtually unlimited room for apps
and games. But if you don't have root, you get to give your apps the
boot.

3. Wireless tethering: Yeah, maybe it's against the rules. But
remember that even T-Mobile's CEO was very vague on this topic. The
fact of the matter is that wireless tethering has saved me and my
coworkers on business trips a number of times now. To us, my G1 is a
hero, but without root it would have been a zero.

4. Latest OS updates immediately available, including tweaks: I like
the new camcorder and soft keyboard, as well as auto-rotating apps and
the multitouch browser. These things make my phone a much nicer device
to me. But you need root on your cell for these features to gel.

There are other things, but these popped into my head in the five
minutes I had to write them.

Like the vast majority of over 1,000,000 G1 users, I do not have the
time or the skills to develop patches or solutions to these problems
or the money to pay someone to do this for me. Root access allowed me
to solve all of these problems very quickly, and at no cost. This is a
very hard business proposition to beat.
