I think it was part of the strategy to get the operators (AT&T) to
cede App Sales to Apple/iTunes. As in "we want to be able to sell
users content, but we're sticking to web apps for 'security'
reasons ... we may need to update our apps via iTunes, of course."
Pretty brilliant since Apple was the one who broke the "Walled Garden"
model of the operators.

At one point we had some of the most popular iPhone web based games
(according to Apple) and just prior to the native app announcement had
a considerable investment in multiplayer games.

These may end up on the Palm Pre ... who knows? We did create a
'portal' for the G1 when it launched with some of these apps:

http://playscreen.com/g1/

What's amusing is to look at one of the web apps on the G1 that also
has a 'native' (Java) version in the App Market. The performance
differences aren't all that notable. More of a indictment of the Java
runtime engine.

Now if Google opened up the App Market for some sort of 'encapsulated'
web app, the way Palm Pre is reported to be doing ... that would be a
very interesting situation. There is a open source tool (PhoneGap)
that does this on the iPhone and Android platforms and at least one of
the 'converted' web apps (Inside Trader) is doing respectable numbers
in the App Store.

Enjoy,
