Old man story alert: At one point in my life I was studying to be a physics teacher. I'll never forget the advice I got from one professor; she said that as much as you want to think like a student, it's essential to "come around to this side of the desk".
As developers, we HAVE to be aware of what's going on out there. In 1987 I wrote an application for an obscure computer that, if I hadn't been so stubborn about not mainstraming it to the PC world, probably would have set me up for life. Lesson learned! I still believe in the Android platform and root for it, but my eyes have been opened, I've "come around to the other side of the desk". I'm not putting all my easter eggs in one basket any more.
