For the applications I have in mind I would be happy with soft real-
time performance. The Linux kernel is frequently used in soft-realtime
applications.  The Dalvik garbage collector problem mentioned above is
a good point.

My thinking is that when/if Android becomes a very popular platform
there may be a plethora of cheap ARM based boards capable of running
Android which might make a great education/hobbyist platform for
electronics, robotics etc.
