I'm on a (vodafone.com.au branded) HTC Magic on the standard vanilla Cupcake. If I turn off the wifi it doesn't reconnect to GPRS/3G. I have to go to settings and toggle on 2G-only, wait a couple of seconds, then turn it off again. Only then will it connect to GPRS/3G.
However, if I let the phone go out of wifi range, it will sometimes (though not always) pickup GPRS/3G.
