Thanks for the post gnugu. This had me stumped for a while on my HTC Hero too, but thanks to your post managed to work it out as it's slightly different on the Hero:
-Start People app. -Select the groups tab -Press menu and select 'sync groups'; -Deselect "Sync all contacts" -Save Job done.
