Tomtom has been available for YEARS on older platforms with much less
storage space available than Dream. Their app itself is only actually
a couple of MB, this is why it would fit easily on internal storage
for a severely outdated palmos device, such as treo 650 (23 MB
available internal). The remaining almost 1 GB north america maps,
voices, etc., would be stored on the sdcard.

FYI: there is an equivalent app available on the market: copilot. And
I use both tomtom (v5 on palmos + v8 on dedicated car-device) as well
as android/copilot, and I can tell you that they are functionally
identical. The maps for copilot seem more complete, and routing is ***
MUCH MUCH FASTER *** (and just as good).

The way that copilot handles it is like this; the market download is a
sensible 7.5 MB. It begins with a 10 day trial period where it gives
you complete access to their service, and within that 10 days
(typically immediately after the 24hr return expires since that is
when they get the checkout number), they will obtain your google
checkout number and associate it back with your device through serial
number/imei/whatever and allow it to activate (takes away the 10 day
limit, it is now permanent).

Regarding map downloads, this happens in one of two ways;
1) the app can download and install the maps to sdcard itself (it's an
all-nighter, you might want to be connected to wifi for this),
2) you can use their desktop sync software to download and install the
maps.

*note: for the larger maps, your sdcard must be fat32 due to the file
sizes.

If download fails, you are free to try again when the space has been
cleared up, therefore there is no issue regarding failed downloads.
Required space for map install is 2x map size since it downloads an
archive file and has to extract it on the sdcard, so about 2GB for
north america maps. If you don't have that much space available, you
can always buy a bigger sdcard -- you can get an 8 GB for $15 at
newegg.
