I don't know what is going on, but I *do* know a solution.... If you root your phone (assuming that it isn't already), you can run a program called "market enabler". This program needs to be run once every time you reboot your phone, and if you have started market before running this program, you need to terminate the market process and clear its cache before it will take effect.
