I have my phone (HTC Hero) configured to automatically get the current
time from the mobile network. However everytime I turn it off and
switch it back on, it still prompts me to set the time. I guess this
is due to the fact that my provider doesn't provide the phone with the
current time (even though I thought this was supported by Vodafone
here in the Netherlands).

Since Android phones are usually always on-line AND are GPS enabled, I
wondered why the phone shouldn't try to get the time from other
sources instead of prompting the user. If the mobile carrier doesn't
provide the time, it could try to get it from the GPS signals, with
the added benefit that it could also automatically determine the
current time zone. If GPS fails, it could try to sync with a NTP
server over the internet.

Is this possible? Could this be included in a future update to the
Android OS, or the functionality possibly added with an application?
