Unfortunately, you will need to write some special code for backwards compatibility if you are using features that are only available in Android 1.6.

The Android Market should allow the previous version of an app to remain in the market so that Android 1.5 devices can still purchase the older version until these devices are upgraded. This would make it easier for the dev so they don't need to write special code to handle backwards compatibility.
