My G1 has been experiencing this problem lately, but I've been able to bring it back to life though. I can even make it die by _very_ gently squeezing it or _very_ gently twisting it similar to the pressure your phone would receive from hanging out in your pocket throughout a normal day. So, it seems that there is some short in the wiring that is triggering this. Its very annoying as it just dies with no warning.
I'm not exactly sure how I bring it back from this "dead" state, but it involves plugging it into a charger (I have best luck with a charger that plugs directly into an electrical outlet rather than a USB port). I generally will remove and then replace the battery. Now, at this moment you'll probably be tempted to try to start the phone by long pressing the power button,, but _don't_. Just let it sit for a while (maybe up to 10 minutes). If the the buttons are light up then this is a good sing. Eventually it usually just turns on by itself. So in short: 1. Plug into charger. 2. Pull and replace battery 3. Wait 10 minutes. 4. If it doesn't turn on by itself, then try turning it on. 5. Rinse and repeat (if this fails) Note: About 3 months ago I replaced the original batter (which was no longer holding a charge) with a new battery.
