There may be forums or sites where designers are willing to do pro bono work, but generally you get more design entries and higher quality work, if you are willing to use your credit card, too :) The alternative to design firms or individual designers, are the sites which allow you to set up a design contest, or benefit in some other way from the wisdom of the crowds. A few useful links: http://99designs.com http://www.crowdspring.com http://www.freshlybranded.com http://www.conceptfeedback.com http://fivesecondtest.com For the icons in my app I used 99designs.com, and got a fair number of submissions. After some feedback from my part, comments from designers, and a few revisions, I chose the winning design. The designer promptly sent me the graphic files, and even made some minor changes after the contest was over. Because of this (and the fact that he now knows about Android UI requirements) I recommend EternityDesign: http://99designs.com/users/300806 I am sure there are other great designers registered with the 5 sites above, and even UI experts who can quickly judge your design attempts. How do you devs handle the UI part of your applications? How much is designed by you, and when do you seek outside help? The UI may be a key element of success, but it is also an unwanted expense, especially for free applications.
